Carl Sterr
Sterr is known for staying true to self in an industry known for catering to rapidly changing tastes. Authentic, warm, and engaging, Carl understands and values relationships. He believes in holding the door, a proper cocktail, and looking you in the eye. With his guitar perpetually by his side, Sterr is always ready to entertain and that gleam in his eye lets you know he appreciates a good joke.
A passionate lover of nature, Sterr began his career with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. Although he enjoyed working on the rails and taking in the landscapes, his familial ties to the menswear industry ultimately prevailed and he transitioned to his father’s establishment, Carl Sterr on the Hill, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. After three years and a progression from sales to management, Sterr opened his first shop at age 28 in nearby Birmingham, Michigan.
Strongly influenced by Ralph Lauren and other sartorial pioneers, Carl blends Italian and English influences with rugged American spirit for a unique design perspective that appeals to the discerning patron.
Sterr has seen decades of business-related pendulum swings and understands the value of merchandise knowledge and exceptional service. Today, this third-generation clothier continues to bring timelessness, quality, and refinement to the world of menswear. As his business partnership with Devin Muldoon has evolved, Carl has been able to expand his time outside of the business with his beautiful family and Scottish deerhounds and enjoy his humble cabin retreat in Northern Michigan.

Devin Muldoon (Doon)
Forever a gritty rugby and football player at heart, Doon enjoys digging in and being part of an industrious team. From slicing the tape on new product boxes to developing and designing new lines, Devin embraces the inclusive nature of small business. Always an introspective creative, he sees his trade as an art form with clothing as his medium and appreciates the unique interplay between clothing, confidence, and performance.
From a young age, Devin Muldoon was taught the values of character, integrity, and diligence. He learned the importance of presenting his best self to the world and, through his family’s influence, developed a penchant for fine clothing and craftsmanship. As he fluidly developed his own personal style, young Doon seemed a natural when curating the proper ensemble for each occasion.
Doon ultimately evolved his love of clothing into a career choice but noted a conspicuous absence of product knowledge and true customer engagement in the industry. After exploring other industries, his circuitous path ultimately led him back to men’s fashion.
A rustic shearling leather jacket in a Birmingham, Michigan shop window caught his eye. Once inside, Devin instantly connected with Carl through their shared desire to advance the industry and so began the collaboration between Sterr and Doon. While staying true to Sterr’s time-honored taste and commitment to classic service, Doon brought fresh, youthful energy and enthusiasm as well as a focus on on-trend, contemporary style for the modern man. Devin and his wife are proud to be firmly rooted in Birmingham, Michigan and have recently started a family.

The Sterr & Doon story wouldn’t be complete without paying homage to the beloved Deerhounds that have graced the Sterr family for the past 30 years. Keegan and Locklan join us in the shop regularly and are warm, memorable giants that our clients know and love.
The Deerhounds exude an air of Sprezzatura, the sophisticated nonchalance that is at the heart of Sterr & Doon style. These friendly creatures unapologetically bring their own hairy, untamed style while effortlessly maintaining the regality of their rich breed.
